"Touching the Past" at GW: Nov. 7 2008

by J J Cohen

ITM readers in or near DC, mark your calendars: on Friday November 7 the newly formed GW Medieval and Early Modern Studies Institute (GW MEMSI) will sponsor its first symposium, "Touching the Past." Four scholars will be presenting on the theme: Peggy McCracken, Eileen Joy, Julian Yates, and Carolyn Dinshaw.

The event is free and welcomes anyone who would like to attend. Details in the early autumn.

PS: I'm also pleased to announce that GW MEMSI will be sponsoring a panel at Kalamazoo 2009: "How to Get the Medieval Studies You Want: Institutional Perspectives." Presenting at this round table will be Bonnie Wheeler, Stephanie Trigg, Carolyn Dinshaw, Ethan Knapp, Malcolm Litchfield, and the ubiquitous Eileen Joy.

Sounds great. I might actually be able to make it up from the wilds of SW VA, since I'm scheduled to be at the Haskins Conference at Georgetown that same weekend. My guess, however, is that my panel will be at the exact same time...

Just our luck, to be competing with Haskins. Well, we did imagine that our own gathering would be done on an intimate scale ...

That sounds like a brilliant Kzoo session.

I had a dream last night where I came to the stunning realization that just about everything worthwhile in current theoretical approaches went back to the works of Philip K. Dick, and as someone who read all of Dick before the age of 22, I was well qualified to make a contribution.

Well, it made for an interesting dream.

Is NYC 'in or near DC'? I so much want to be there...

Steve: you're a genius. Seriously. For the first time ever, I taught Phillip K. Dick last year ["The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch" and "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep"--we also read William Gibson's "Neuromancer"], and the thing is, I think you're on to something. Now, throw in some Haruki Maurakami, and you're really on to something.

Oh, and the symposium at GW looks really great. I wish *I* were going to "in or near" the DC area as well.

Karl: road trip!

Eileen, if you do not attend and do not present, you will not be eligible for that $20,000 honorarium we promised.

Oh, SNAP! Okay, I'll be there. I keep forgetting my mantra: it's all about the money. It's all about the money.

Liza: I'm thinking Chinatown bus...

Karl and Liza> Chinatown bus-road trip! I'm totally in if you guys are.

a deal! Though I prefer DC2NY myself, I'd be willing to go China for you two.

I have no particular preference of transport so long as it's in the $80 or so or less range.....I'll see if Nicola wants to go too. W/ 4 people it might make sense to rent a car, unless we want to keep our $ reserved to buy Eileen drinks.

Here's what I say: you people get to DC and I will buy ALL of you a drink. Make that more than one drink. Make that a pitcher of mojitos. Or Cosmos. or whatever you prefer. Then later, we can hit the clubs with Tiny.
